Freeman still trying for Rendezvous with Rama
A poll on SciFi’s website says that Morgan Freeman is still trying to get a film based on Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama. I hope it gets done. Rama is such a good book.
Also from that poll, nearly 700 humans are too stupid to live (see Response #4 and do the math, click to enlarge).

The Sensational One Passes
I learned today that Sherri Martel died last week. From when I was about 10 years old until I was entering college I watched wrestling. You know, back before the scripts were so crazy (okay, a storyline about an undertaker who’s dead but not but blah blah blah) and it was still entertaining to watch.
One of the most entertaining performers, to me, was Sensational Sherri. The ultimate bad girl. She was my #1. My favorite woman on wrestling and in the top five of all of my favorites. This is embarrassing, but when I saw someone mention casually on a website that she had died last week I felt like crying.

Rumors for Star Trek XI
There’s a poll on SciFi Wire this week asking if the viewer approves of a rumor that the new Star Trek movie will be “reimagined” to have more action to “appeal to a broader audience” (read: neanderthals) and “less McCoy”. I for one disapprove. McCoy was more than just a doctor. He was my favorite character in both The Original Series and the movies. A crotchety fellow who didn’t mind speaking his mind. I liked that and I liked him.
Maybe if they’re going to “reimagine” the TOS universe, they should reimagine a new audience, too.
Total Eclipse of the 24-year-old Heart
I find it hard to believe that Bonnie Tyler‘s “Total Eclipse of the Heart” is 24 years old this year. Oh, I can do the math, but it just doesn’t seem that old.Oh, she has a new greatest hits compilation out now in the UK: From the Heart: Greatest Hits. She’ll be in Los Angeles and Las Vegas in November for performances.

Best iTunes Search Evah!
A friend sent me this in iChat:
[Mary Bono] benefits financially whenever ["I Got You Babe" is] played on the radio, used in a commercial, bought on a CD, downloaded from iTunes, shown in a movie like “Groundhog Day”, played on the muzak at an Old Navy store, covered “ironically” by a punk band, sold as sheet music to a beginning pianist, …
May I Nominate Mary Bono For “Jackass Of The Week”? — Thought Palace
Note the bold part. This intrigued me so I opened iTunes and ran a search for “I Got You Babe” and it was the funniest set of results ever. Great covers include those by The Dictators, Etta James, and Gay and Gabe. Tiny Tim chimes in with his freakish cover, too.
There’s even a bluegrassy version and check out this bit of random.

Update: I just heard the UB40 version on the radio. How bizarre.
Most interesting thing from the Oscars in ages
It’s the Hollywood Sound Effects Chorale and their recreation of sounds from movie scenes using nothing but their voices. No computers, no machines, no instruments. Just them. How accurate they were was really fascinating.
Hilariously accurate
Heap is the new Björk
Sure there’s no animal in her dress, but Imogen Heap showed up at the Grammys Sunday night in a dress weird enough to justify the comparison.

SciFi management is full of idiots
SciFi had it good, great even. Their Friday night line-up was superb. It was even worthy of staying in and not having “fun” with friends but they went and fucked it up. Now what happened? Ratings have declined for their biggest shows: Battlestar Galactica, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate SG-1. So much so that they’ve canceled SG-1 and have yet to renew BSG for a fourth season.
Battlestar Galactica moves to Sunday nights starting January 21 at 10 p.m. on the SCI FI Channel to finish its third season. There is no confirmation on a fourth season pick-up yet.
Should Galactica‘s ratings continue to erode, the highly acclaimed series may be discontinued….
I’m not sure what they were thinking. With the previous Friday night line-up, all three shows had good ratings. Now they’ve put the kibosh on SG-1 and might kill off Galactica. When SciFi split up the Stargates and BSG, ratings declined for both. It was a bad idea plain and simple.
