But what if you're neither?

leave a comment »

George W. President sat down with Larry King on CNN tonight (transcript). During the interview, he made the following statement:

I like to tell people I would rather be — when history looks back, I’d rather be judged as solving problems and being correct, rather than being popular.

That made me think, “But what if you’re neither?”

Jobs #5 on "People who matter" list

leave a comment »

Business 2.0 Magazine has compiled a list of the top 50 people “who matter now” in business. They placed Steve Jobs of Apple at the number 5 spot on that list. Others who made the cut include Rupert Murdoch, the Google founders, and some “Oil Despots”.

They’ve also compiled a list of the top ten people who don’t matter: people who’ve lost influence in the business community. Included in that list are Steve Ballmer, Rob Malda of Slashdot, and Linus Torvalds.

"Encryption can keep data safe on laptops"—Duh.

leave a comment »

Many stolen laptops have made the news recently, one of which included information on thousands of veterans. That prompted the Department of Veteran Affairs to send out thousands of letters to those affected warning them to watch their credit for suspicious activity (my dad got one a few weeks ago).

An ABC News article suggests that if the laptops had used encryption technology, the problem may not be as bad as it is.

That just made me think of OS X’s FileVault. FileVault is an encryption technology that is built in OS X. It encrypts the contents of a user’s Home directory with “the latest government security standard, AES-128 encryption”.

Real security comes from knowing nobody can rifle through your files without your permission. FileVault uses the latest government security standard to safeguard your hard work. It protects all the info in your home folder from prying eyes, so your trade secrets stay secret, your holiday shopping lists are kept safe and your personal finance records remain protected.

Mac = More secure.

KKK becoming irrelevant

with one comment

Members of the KKK and other fringe groups held a rally yesterday at Antietam National Battlefield. Only 30 people showed up.

Worse still, only 30 counter-demonstrators showed up showing just how marginalized the KKK and the Aryans are becoming. There was a time when such a rally would draw hundreds of the morons (KKK/Aryans) and even more counter-demonstrators.

Both groups were overshadowed by the police presence which topped out at around 200.

This is too funny:

Calls made by RAW STORY to the International Republican Institute for comment on the recent story by Muriel Kane went unreturned. During one such call, however, group spokesperson Lisa Gates left the phone line open while she explained to an associate why she intended to ignore the call…

In all, RAW STORY was allowed to listen in on the conversation for approximately 15 minutes–the remainder of a 17-minute phone call. IRI did not answer subsequent calls from RAW STORY.

Underwear snobbery, Gore v. Lohan, and a big rock hits Norway

Al Gore tickles Jay Leno’s funny bone.

“It’s not all fun,” Gore remarked. “For instance, I have this huge thing with Lindsay Lohan now. When Leno asked how the feud started, Gore responded, “she knows what she did.”

The Raw Story | Gore: Lindsay Lohan ‘knows what she did’

A record-setting meteorite slammed into Norway on Wednesday. It’s presumed to be the largest to hit Norway at “considerably larger” than 198 lbs.

As Wednesday morning dawned, northern Norway was hit with an impact comparable to the atomic bomb used on Hiroshima.

At around 2:05 a.m. on Wednesday, residents of the northern part of Troms and the western areas of Finnmark could clearly see a ball of fire taking several seconds to travel across the sky.

A few minutes later an impact could be heard and geophysics and seismology research foundation NORSAR registered a powerful sound and seismic disturbances at 02:13.25 a.m. at their station in Karasjok.

And Slate has posted “an underpants manifesto”.

It’s come to my attention that there are some men out there—even a few friends of mine—who’ve not yet switched to boxer briefs. These are otherwise intelligent fellows who, either through ignorance or recalcitrance, begin each day by pulling on (shudder) traditional boxers or (double-shudder) briefs. I feel great pity for these men. Because the irrefutable truth is that boxer briefs—a knit, mid-thigh-length compromise between boxer and brief—are the ultimate male netherwear. The sooner you accept this, the happier your crotch will be.
