Sad day: Miss Tammy Faye, part 3

On Friday, Miss Tammy Faye lost her 11 year battle against cancer. I was gone from around 11:00AM Friday and didn’t find out until very late Saturday night when someone was channel surfing and stumbled up on CNN. I have written previously about Mrs. Messner and her health. Her death wasn’t surprising since the last report that I read said that she’d dropped to 65 pounds and her doctors had stopped her treatment, but it was nonetheless sad news.

Rest in peace, Miss Tammy Faye.

I think being gay is just being a person who has a different thought on life. They’re just people. I don’t think that God categorizes people. I went to Disneyland one time, and it rained — it’s so awful when it rains at Disneyland — and everyone disappeared inside. And when the rain stopped and everybody came out, every single person had yellow raincoats on. You couldn’t tell the fat from the thin, the rich from the poor. You couldn’t tell anyone from anyone else. And that day I looked up and I said, “God, I think this is how you see us, all in yellow raincoats, and only you have the permission to look under those yellow raincoats.” link

Miss Tammy Faye, Part 2

I wrote a year ago about Tammy Faye Messner’s fight with cancer and how things weren’t looking good. A year later, things are looking worse. She’s down to 65 pounds and her doctors have stopped their treatment of her. She’s posted a letter on her website about her illness and its effect on her life.

The doctors have stopped trying to treat the cancer and so now it’s up to God and my faith. And that’s enough! But please continue to pray for the pain and sick stomach.

Miss Tammy Faye

For some reason, the gays, myself included, just love Tammy Faye Messner. I’m not sure why, but I do. Maybe it’s because, while she is a Christian, she’s not a hate-filled Christian like so many others. Or maybe it’s because she bares a resemblance to Dolly Parton (blonde hair, heavy makeup). I’m not sure. It doesn’t matter.

What matters is that she’s sick. Very sick. She has stage 4 cancer in her colon and lungs. She’s down to 97 pounds.

While I don’t pray, I am sending my positive thoughts her way. The thought of her so ill or even dying makes me really, really sad and again, I’m not sure why beyond general compassion for my fellow (wo)man. Maybe it’s because, even through all of the drama of her life, through all the turbulent hears, she always kept her faith. I can, though I don’t share it, at least admire her for it. Throughout all of her trials, she’s always been a shining example to her fellow Christians and to people in general of how to live as a good human being: treating everyone with love and respect.

I hope that she goes into remission. I hope even more that she’s fully cured.

we love you tammy faye! |
